DIGITAL SIGNAGE / NARROWCASTING - WHAT IS IT?

Narrowcasting in public places is an ever increasing phenomenon today. What is it, you may ask? Essentially it involves delivering highly targeted, customized messages to audiences in public locations at scheduled times. These do not have to be advertising, but would often be a mix of information, TV, news & advertising. Usually, this is accomplished with a networked multimedia system allowing rapid production, customization, distribution, and playback to multiple locations on display devices such as TVs, plasma or LCD screens, and projections (indoors or outdoors) ...

DIGITAL SIGNAGE / NARROWCASTING - WHAT CAN WE OFFER?

To satisfy our customers requirements for digital signage, EPH now offer the highly flexible OneLan Net-Top-Box media server system to our clients. This is a highly configurable and easy to use system which allows easily / automatically updateable content to be delivered to display devices. The OneLan system can utilise almost any input source, which can then be arranged on screen in zones. All content can be scheduled, allowing (for instance), a canteen lunch menu to display at lunchtime, whilst useful notices, weather & TV can show at other times.

The beauty of the OneLan system is that essential messages (eg Health & Safety, Fire Safety) can be displayed onscreen alongside something selected to be of more interest to the target market. If health & safety messages were displayed alone in a school they would be ignored, but if they run below a window with MTV then they have more chance of being read. Makes sense, doesn't it? The MTV can be substituted by Financial News in a financial services office, etc.

The boxes can be configured with multi user level access, allowing specified users password controlled access to ad-hoc pages which they control. This means that a chef can update menus, but that they can't alter system files, or other users pages, whilsts a 2nd user (a clerk for instance) can be assigned pages to update which display meeting room schedules.

The OneLan box can display a combination of the following:

  • TV - (Freeview box incorporated, suitable aerial required)
  • RSS feeds (eg weather, news, stock tickers, etc)
  • Clock (NTP server can assure correct time)
  • Web Pages
  • Local Content
  • Movies (most formats supported)
  • Images (most formats supported)
  • Streaming Video (UDP://)
  • Text (Static message or user updatable)
  • Powerpoint
Scheduling & Digital Signage

The OneLan box allows for content to be scheduled. News headlines on the hour? No problem! Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Menus? No problem! Different content for the weekend? Again, no problem. The scheduling allows for a full 7 day program to run, with as many specfic items running over a default display item as required. The OneLan box can issue RS232 commands which allow display devices to be turned on and off automatically, according to the schedule.

On Screen Layout - Design

The OneLan box allows for custom screen layouts featuring any combination of sources arranged into "zones". The page can be designing utilising corporate logos, fonts and colour schemes keeping your digital signage "on message". We can provide a design service for clients who require it. Alternatively, we can provide user training as required. Once your box is setup then content can be updated automatically and / or simply as required.

Networking

As the name sugggests, the 1Lan box is a network device, and can be administered remotely through any browser such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc. If the intention to do this is not from the local network, then a static ip address would be required. The One Lan box itself can be configured to use a static ip address or lease one from a dhcp server on the network. It will attempt to setup default gateway and dns server if it can. The linux driven (fedora) box has a firewall which can be configured to further restrict access if required improving security greatly. (Highly recommended in any situation where the 1 lan box is on a public network).
